Wake Tech: East Wake Campus’ Public Safety Simulation Center

Preparing the Next Generation of First Responders

The Public Safety Simulation Center is the first student-occupied facility on Wake Tech’s East Wake 4.0 Campus and serves as a cutting-edge training center for first responders across multiple disciplines, including police, fire, and EMS. This innovative center is designed to equip students and in-service professionals with the skills needed for real-world emergency response through advanced training technology.

Advanced Training Capabilities

One of the standout features of the center is its simulated residential EMS training pod, where students and in-service professionals can engage in real-time emergency response scenarios. The use of intelligent manikins, which wirelessly transmit vital signs and patient interactions to control rooms, significantly enhances the training experience. This technology provides immediate feedback and monitoring, ensuring that participants are well-prepared for actual emergencies.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is a core tenet at Wake Tech, which views its buildings as living laboratories for environmental stewardship. The training center reflects this commitment through its Three Green Globes certification, showcasing one of the county’s largest rooftop photovoltaic solar arrays. By prioritizing sustainability, resiliency, and occupant well-being, the facility incorporates energy-efficient systems, passive solar shading, daylighting techniques, and sustainable building materials.

Integrating Practical Skills

The design prioritizes a dynamic, human-centered environment while fulfilling practical training needs for both students and in-service professionals. Multi-functional and specialty training rooms cater to health care providers and first responders, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience. A fully immersive 3D virtual reality lab adds an exciting dimension to the curriculum, focusing on essential skills such as de-escalation and mental health crisis intervention.

Comprehensive Simulation Experiences

Additionally, the facility features a unique indoor simulation village that replicates various emergency scenarios. This innovative approach provides students with comprehensive learning experiences, allowing them to practice their skills in realistic settings.

Fostering Community Engagement

Functioning as both an educational space and a gathering place, the PSSC emphasizes community engagement. With a transparent lobby and outdoor debriefing areas, the design encourages interaction among students and first responders, fostering camaraderie and collaboration within the community.
