WCPSS: Apex Friendship Elementary School

Innovative Design for Diverse Learners

Boomerang successfully reimagined the WCPSS plan to create innovative and collaborative Learning Commons that align with the District’s program standards. This project caters to a diverse student population of 800 and features two distinct building designs: a one-story core functions building that includes a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten wing, along with a three-story structure dedicated to classrooms for grades first through fifth.

Navigating Construction Challenges

Construction took place between 2021 and 2022, a period marked by significant challenges, including material supply chain issues and rising costs stemming from the 2020 pandemic. Despite these hurdles, Boomerang’s close collaboration with the contractor and its prompt response to requests for information (RFIs) and submittals enabled the project to be completed on time and nearly $1 million under budget.

Strategic Problem-Solving to Overcome Delays

The project faced various supply challenges, including delays in storefront systems, glazing, and chiller delivery. To ensure comfortable conditions for ongoing interior work, five temporary HVAC units were strategically placed on-site. Proactive collaboration with local authorities further facilitated the installation of temporary structures, which helped secure the building’s perimeter during construction.

Commitment to Quality + Timeliness

Ultimately, the team’s adaptability and proactive problem-solving ensured the project not only met its deadlines but also maintained a high standard of quality throughout construction. Weekly review meetings played a crucial role in addressing material delays and coordinating installations within the tight timeframe, reinforcing Boomerang’s commitment to creating exceptional educational environments.
