CMS: First Ward Elementary School Conversion to Middle School

Renovation of First Ward Creative Arts Academy

First Ward Elementary, now known as First Ward Creative Arts Academy, is located at 715 North Caldwell Street in one of the oldest and most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Uptown Charlotte. Originally constructed in 1900 as the North School, the building was one of three founding schools for the city’s first public school system.

Transformative Changes

The renovation is transforming the school into an arts-focused middle school magnet, featuring flexible, multifunctional classrooms designed to inspire creativity and academic excellence. Specialized science labs will complement the arts curriculum, blending STEM education with artistic exploration.

Updated Facilities

Renovations include upgrades to essential systems for improved functionality and efficiency, ensuring better support for students and staff. The adaptable design will cater to evolving educational needs while fostering a warm, inviting environment that encourages strong community and family involvement.

Commitment to History

Although it is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the renovation team is committed to preserving the building’s historical character in the design. This approach will allow the school to continue nurturing a collaborative environment where students can develop their artistic talents under the guidance of teachers and professional facilitators.
