City of Charlotte: CFD’s Firehouse #11 Replacement

In Construction

Growing Needs of the Charlotte Fire Department

As Charlotte continues to grow, the CFD operational demands have surpassed the capabilities of Legacy Firehouse #11, which has faithfully served the community since 1958. Long home to the area’s rescue company and special dive unit, the aging facility can no longer be cost‑effectively renovated, making a new firehouse essential to support today’s service expectations.

Innovative Design for Modern Operations

The new two-story, 17,700-square-foot Firehouse #11 is designed from the ground up to support modern fire and rescue operations on a tight urban site. Four drive-through apparatus bays anchor to the ground level, with thoughtfully planned living quarters above—maximizing space efficiency, improving response readiness, and creating a highly functional, team-focused environment for CFD personnel.

Collaborative Efforts + Stakeholder Engagement

Boomerang Design partnered closely with a broad team of stakeholders—including CFD leadership, City Engineering and Property Management, Building Services, Energy and Sustainability, and IT Support—to shape the vision for the new station. Through a series of focused work sessions, the team refined operations, adjacencies, and aesthetics to deliver a design that aligns with the City’s performance standards, brand, and long-term goals.
