The school features flexible classroom layouts, opportunities for indoor-outdoor connectivity, and a strong emphasis on energy efficiency to support the growing population of Currituck County.

Serving a Growing Community
Boomerang Design worked with Currituck County Schools, in partnership with Currituck County, to design and construct the recently completed Tulls Creek Elementary School. This new 118,000-square-foot facility is strategically located on a 36-acre county-owned site adjacent to the Moyock Public Library. The purpose of this new school building is to alleviate overcrowding and to prepare for anticipated population growth in one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing counties. The school was completed in time to welcome its first class of students for the 2026-27 school year.
A Path to Sustainable + Wellness-Focused Spaces
The inclusion of natural lighting design is crucial to creating spaces that prioritize sustainability and wellness. Natural lighting reduces building energy costs by decreasing reliance on artificial lighting and can regulate building temperature. In addition to alleviating utility costs, natural light also aids in promoting wellness through enhancing the users’ connection to nature – a critical component of wellness since exposure to natural light aids in the regulation of users’ circadian rhythm and assists in elevating mood.

Designing Resilient Coastal Buildings
Additionally, the building features a low-maintenance brick exterior paired with a sloped metal roof. The selection of these materials is more than their aesthetic appeal; they ensure durability and long-term viability, a vital factor in designing buildings in coastal climates. Prioritizing durable solutions helps buildings perform under stress and reduces their environmental impact.
Accommodating Enrollment Fluctuations
To accommodate fluctuating enrollment numbers, the design of Tulls Creek Elementary implements standardized classroom layouts that prioritize flexibility. Each classroom has similar dimensions and casework, equipped with uniform plumbing fixture heights and adaptable furniture. This approach allows for seamless transitions in classroom utilization by grade level, providing immediate solutions to overcrowding and fostering long-term savings through easy expansion capabilities.

Enhanced Indoor-Outdoor Connectivity
The school’s design promotes enhanced connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating collaborative environments ideal for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programs. This feature was designed to enrich students’ learning experiences and provide diverse opportunities for engagement.

The project team conducted regular meetings throughout the design and construction processes to maximize cost savings and minimize delays. As the District anticipates the growth that Tulls Creek Elementary will facilitate, this forward-thinking, sustainable facility stands as a pivotal solution to address the educational and developmental needs of the community.

Introducing Tully the Tiger
As part of our branding initiative for Tulls Creek Elementary School, our team collaborated with Currituck County Schools to create the school’s mascot, Tully the Tiger. Tigers represent strength, courage, and excellence—qualities that both Currituck County Schools and Tulls Creek aim to instill in their students. Our goal was to design a mascot that is fun, spirited, and relatable to young learners. Instead of adopting the “fierce warrior” appearance often seen in professional, college, or high school mascots, we chose to depict Tully as a cheerful student. This approach embodies school spirit in a way that resonates with students in grades K-5.
